Saffron, Soho and The Valley

August 24th, 2010

Desktop1The Loveliest Summer day was spent driving through the countryside of Oldwick Tewksbury New Jersey with my family.  We live in The Valley, actually we live on top of a gorgeous mountain looking down over the Valley.  Must be why I say “Oh My God That’s Totally Cool” all the time, I am sort of a Valley Girl….As we passed by rolling green farmland, meticulous orchards, sprawling farmhouses that ooze class, style and grace,  and pristine horse farms, we planned our stops. First is was a stop at the Farmer’s Market for Squash Blossoms for the most delicious stuffed Squash Blossoms. Then it was off to the local wine shop to pick up a couple bottles of wine.  We stopped by a little antique and gift shop for a few more over sized white serving platters for The Paris House and while I was there I found the most lovely stone trough to be incorporated into a farm sink for our Springhouse.  Then it was off to the Magic Shop the quaintest and cutest shop, stocked full of enchanted toys for Oliver and goodies for adults.  I found the sweetest little toaster there a few months ago, its pink with red poppies on it, every single person who comes in our home smiles and comments on it.  It is indeed a magical shop.  Lastly, as we approached the gigantic stone brew pub where we would pick up some fun beer for the weekend, we decided to make a quick stop at our local cheese shop.  This is only minutes from our home and is one of the most delightful farms and cheese shops I have ever been too. The Valley Shepherd Creamery makes amazing cheese with their own farm raised animals. They supply not only to us lucky locals but they supply and sell out almost immediately to William Sonoma.  We are happy to say they have just expanded to Soho, while you are there pop in to Grand Daisy Bakery next door for some homemade breads.  The Shepherd Valley Creamery is always being sought after by Foodies and local restaurants in the city.    To me this is a perfect day, one to give thanks for.

Safronella

A 100% sheep milk with whole black peppercorns.

Why you may ask?   Just for our Sicilian friends who grew up with the local famous Piacentinu Ennese. The Saffron definitely takes over and the whole white peppercorn are a nice highlight.

The picture says it all.
Summer 201027
We invited over a few friends and enjoyed our cheese platter and Squash Blossoms. I love all their cheeses but my top 3 picks are, The tartufa (black truffle), the ba ba blue, incredible and the The Saffronella, I cook often with saffron and even went to the Middle East to bring back saffron from the souk, I love it so much.
Summer 201026
I love seeing Oliver’s little hand reaching over.  He is quite a cheese expert.  He loves Mimolette.
Summer 201025
I have enjoyed everything we cooked this Summer, had at friends homes, in Bermuda and elsewhere.  But I must say these delightful squash blossoms and homemade sauce from heirloom tomatoes in my garden may be my favorite dish.

Still using my old Martha by Mail piping bag and loving every minute of it!!
Hope to be back blogging in a week or so all depends on our travel schedule.  I am going to try not too work until I get back to NYC to meet with clients in a couple weeks!  We will send out Sweet Tweets from the road.  We are headed to fun places that the kids will love and an interesting stop that Mrs. Bunny will love and Mr. Bunny will like and tolerate because he loves Mrs. Bunny, its all good…more to come.
Please visit Susan at Tablescape Thursdays and Gollum at Foodie Fridays for more delightful dining and entertaining ideas.

What a gourmet cheese spread! Looks delicious, PLUS beautiful! I loved Oliver’s little hand reaching in to grab something, so cute! I wish my son liked cheese… never has. (Only on pizza! or something parmagiano, or Fettuccine Alfredo, not much else…) You are lucky that Oliver appreciates a good piece of cheese. And hey, I want to see a pic of your cute little toaster!! :)
    Best,
    Gloria

  6. Hi Bunny, that sounds like the absolutely perfect day!! All of those places you mentioned are absolutely wonderful and I love shopping in small, local business establishments like that. The service and quality of the merchandise and food cannot be beat, and there are so many very unique things to find – so different than heading to the big grocery store or huge liquor store. I’ll have to give that sheep’s milk cheese a try – with FHFB being of Sicilian heritage, we always have a chunk of the more aged pecorino with whole peppercorns in the house. We love having it with Sicilian green olives, slices of spicy salami, a loaf of semolina bread and a glass or two of wine. And squash blossoms – OMG!! So delicious!! Hope all is well – how excited is Oliver about starting kindergarten? Ciao, bella!

Hi my wonderful neighbor, I enjoyed reading your post about our local attractions…. We love the creamery and Sarah has been begging me to take her to the Magic Shop. I used to visit the Magic Shop as a child with my mother. Back then (hehe), they had a bunny hole where children could slide down into an area that was so magical…I still have great memories of this place. Your article has motivated me to bring Sarah very soon! Hope to see you soon! XOXO Wendy

  8. Bunny says:

    Hi Wendy,

Yes they do still have the ‘Bunny Hole’ at The Magic Shop!! Isn’t it the most wonderful place. I should host Oliver’s next birthday there under a tent, that would be fun. See you soon
    xoxo

I am a huge fan of cheese boards and yours is so elegant and full of wonderful yummies!!!
I grow squash and have lovely blossoms but have never made edible squash blossoms. I am taking your word that they are marvelous.

You have just described my idea of a perfect day…and a perfect meal. With our “nest” empty, we often enjoy a bit of cheese, fruit and wine and call it dinner. Perfection. I only wish we had such a cheese shop near us.

  18. ButterYum says:

  19. What a lovely, mouthwatering post! Sounds like you had a wonderful day…and what fantastic photos of all that lovely, yummy cheese!

  20. All I can say, Bunny, is OH MY GOD!!! I am drooling over all the deliciousness!

  21. I have one word today — drooling. Okay, more than one word, I adore cheese spreads like this and squash blossoms? Oh yeah, I love squash blossoms. When I lived in California I could grow the best squash. We would fill them with various fillings, coat them with a tempura batter and fry them up. Yummy!

Well, I have to go now. I see there is another installment of Magdalena’s adventures and I can’t wait to see what that girl is up to!

  22. Beverly says:

Happy Pink Saturday, Bunny. Thank you for making Pink Saturday special. I hope you are having a wonderful time. You always have plenty of pink here to brighten our days.

I’m still hoping to reach my goal of 200 comments by midnight tonight.
