An Old Fashioned Day Part Deux

I posted many of these pictures last Summer and thought I would share them again with The Gang over at Tablescape Thursdays and Foodie Fridays. It was a gorgeous day at our farmhouse and I was missing all of my Grandparents and decided to throw a little get together in our orchard using many treasures that were passed down to me from my Great Grandparents.  Of course there is always a delicious Cocktail at my parties and they can always be found on our Cheers’ section on our website. ( There are videos and many cocktail recipes, its a fun part of the website to visit)

I love serving these Blueberry Lemonade Spritzer cocktails in my Grandmother’s old Ball Jars. The Mint is from ‘Bunny’s Garden.’

We use these charming wood farm animal plates for many of our outdoor picnics.

I just adore this vintage style tin picnic basket.

One of the many aprons handed down to me from my Great Grandmother’s collections.  They are just so charming.
Planning a day in the orchard

Ah sunshine …Finally we can eat out in the old orchard under the plum tree

A collection of milk and Ball jars

Setting the scene with some French antiques..These pieces are usually in our spring house and can easily be moved outside in nice weather for a luncheon, picnic or party.

Out by the old Spring House

After my Grandmother passed away my Mother gave me all her aprons , they were my Great Grandmothers. I don’t wear them, but I do love them very much. They are all handmade by Abby and I can still see my beloved Grandmother Margaret wearing them around her kitchen.
Aprons have been around for many many years. Obviously we wear them to protect our clothes but in the “olden days” they often didn’t wash their clothes for days if not for a week so they needed to keep them as clean as possible. There still is the association with June Cleaver and the apron which makes many people think of the “perfect” wife and mom from the 50′s. I just think they are so very lovely, homey and old fashioned. I will always cherish these so much that I planned an entire photo shoot, party and meal around them. I was never fortunate enough to meet my Great Grandmother Abby but I was hoping that if by any chance she or my grandmothers were looking down on me and my family on that sunny beautiful day that they would be proud of me and feel very flattered that I am carrying on their memories.

I just love this shot, just floating in a summer breeze with a blue sky in the background. Sometimes if we take a little time and care we CAN re-create the good old days…if only for an afternoon.

This simple gingham fabric was purchased for next to nothing at Joann’s fabrics in Clifton Park NY (upstate)

I have had these two cookbooks since I was in my 20′s even before I was married they are very special to me. My mother bought them for me at the old Jelly Mill in Vermont when we were there with my Grandmother. The little box on top holding my Grandmother’s Jelly jars was made by my sweetheart, Grandfather Sabatine, it use to hold all their pens, paper and sit by their telephone on the counter.  Isn’t it just the perfect shade! Underneath was a drawer that had the built in bread drawer that always smelled like heaven on Earth. Don’t you just love the color of that box, he was a happy happy man and chose a happy color. Looks so cute with the red thermos.

Chilling drinks in the orchard.

All French antiques purchased in Paris and the French countryside

this is a Blueberry Lemonade spritzer

the little tricycle has been used for 15 years by all of my sons , the white chair is another great grandmother heirloom I was their only Grand daughter so I inherited a lot of their antiques, which I blend beautifully with modern chic pieces ( One of my first loves in design). I hope all of you have something to cherish that reminds you of special times.
Have a Beautiful Day.

What fun, Bunny! And you got to display all those wonderful things you inherited on your table. The cookbooks look like fun.
I love aprons….unfortunately I only have one. I can’t think for the life of me where all those charming ones my grandmother had went. They sure knew how to make aprons back then. Actually, it was the first thing I made in a sewing class in school too. (What a disaster.)
I always love coming to your house for a party!

  17. Mimi says:

What a great setting for a picnic style meal…that table is gorgeous. Is the Jelly Mill in Manchester, VT, by any chance? I grew up and skied in and around that area. I love the aprons, reminds me of a simpler time.

  18. Bonjour Bunny,

I love your old-fashioned day! It looks like the perfect way to enjoy a summer day. Your Grandmother’s aprons look so sweet hanging from the line. Oh yes they are looking down and very proud that you are an incredible wife and mother. Your images are great. Oh to go back to those June Cleaver days…

    Bon soir,
    Mimi

Hi Bunny, what a beautiful post… you know me and old~fashioned things and wonderful memories… I don’t think of June Cleaver (never did care for her!) I think of someone like yours and my grandmothers and great~grandmothers who lovingly wore those beautiful aprons and ran their households with love… and I KNOW your grandmothers are looking down and smiling… you know how I always say that too about my family heirlooms, or those I have purchased at estate sales… I love the photographs of the aprons on the clothesline blowing in the breeze… simple country pleasures that are just my style… xoxo Julie Marie

You did a really nice job putting everything together. I really like your aprons. Have a great weekend! Mary

  26. What precious jewels you have inherited from your family. Your entire vignette made me smile. My husband and I are also blessed to have the privilege to act as caretakers for many special items passed down from our families. I have no doubt that your grandmother and great-grandmother were smiling and there as silent, unseen guests at your charming tablescape. You truly honored them. Thank you for sharing your special treasures. Cherry Kay

  27. I love the apron with the dish towel sewn right in, I remember my grandmother having one like it and those dish towels crocheted on top with a button so you could attach it to the stove handle. I think my mom made dozens and dozens of those for friends and family. I think I still have a couple around here somewhere. What sweet memories you’ve brought me today and what sweet memories you have created for your family.

Everything is so lovely Bunny, you have that magical touch that makes everything you do look so inviting. I can just envision myself sitting under that plum tree, feasting on tasty morsels, sipping one of those lemonade cocktails and enjoying the company of sweet friends.

Hugs to you and a special one to Oliver!

Ahhh! sweet Bunny ~ What a fabulous write … these aprons carry me away to Mother & G’ma Maggie. The vintage feedsack fabrics for every day use & the delicate frilly dressier fabrics for Sunday & special occasions. Even we girls had aprons. How beautiful the aprons floating in the air … smiles from above, for sure.

So reminds me of the carefree days of yore of the summer meals we shared in the outdoors … how inviting your setting. What time are you serving? Chuckle! Always had to have a tablecloth on the table indoors or out …

The tricycle is too cute. How fortunate to receive the antiques, being the only girl …

You create the most fabulous inviting settings, Bunny. Another beautiful day … with my Master Oliver & his precious Mother.

    Have a lovely weekend.
Hugs of love to you both ~ Marydon

I love the way you’ve moved your antique French furniture outdoors. It really creates an Old World feel! The vintage metal picnic basket is charming. My very favorite element is that you’ve displayed your heirloom aprons on the line. Such a lovely, sweet, sentimental touch.

    Nicely done, as always!

  30. My dearest Bunny,
firstly, I’d like to thank you for your comforting & kind words…I’m doing better each day!
Once again, I’m so charmed by your creativity, adore every details down to the cloth-pins~ how cute are those!
Reminded me of the famous French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley.
Wishing you a lovely summer weekend darling!

much love to you & family as always*
    xo~

  31. Hi Michele, thanks for stopping by my blog posts and leaving such supportive and thoughtful comments – and a thank you for the birthday wishes!! I just love this post about your great grandma’s aprons!! My grandmother used to make aprons out of cotton housecoats she would wear around the house. I often joke about how wonderful it would be to be able to hang around the house braless in one of those blousy, colorful housecoats – but it’s not a good look, is it??

Your Old Fashioned Day pictures was just wonderful – I loved the colors and the mixing and matching of different glasses and table accessories – you have such a talent. Isn’t it great to put something together like that, have family and friends enjoy it while it makes you feel comfortable and connected to the past? I think that connections reminding us that we can bring simpler times into our daily lives are priceless! Ciao, bella!
