Grandmothers and Gardens

May 15th, 2009

Everytime I smell lilacs their heavenly fragrance just captivates me and takes me back many years to my grandmother Carmellas yard. They had rows of lavender lilac bushes lined up between their house and the Assumption church that perfumed the entire yard (along with the fabulous desserts and breads she was always baking). There were always close hung out on the clothesline drying and people were always stopping by to eat something fabulous she made. My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 9 and in the 4th grade, they gave her 6 months to live, well she passed away a couple years ago when I was 41 and she was 91!!! She prayed to “The Blessed Mother” as she always said and left her fate in her hands. She also baked and cooked all the time, lived among the lilacs, family and was always happy and optimistic. Lilacs remind me of her and give me hope and happiness everytime I see and smell them.
