As a professional designer and party planner, I use a lot of flowers in my home and parties to decorate on a daily basis as well as for my parties and my clients parties. As the Summer is now way behind us and we are fully immersed in the beauty of Autumn you may be tempted to put your gardens to bed for the Winter and decorate with a few mums. I love decorating with Mums, pumpkins, cabbage, kale, and gourds. They make wonderful garden and home decorations this time of the year but there is so much more that your Autumn garden has to offer.
Try adding pansies. I love the deep purple color agains the orande pumpkins and green foliage. Pansies are not just for the Springtime they are very hardy and popular during the fall months. Mine even come back each year and we are in zone 6.
Expand your fall perennial borders by adding Japenese Lanterns(Physalis Franchetti), they are so much fun dried and put in fresh floral arrangements. I love plumes or feather/grass plants. I searched everywhere and finally found La Pimprenell, Sanguisorba Orbtusa. They look beautiful planted with perennial asters such as the New England hardy varieties in purple and pink, mine come back bigger and better each fall. Another must for the fall garden is the Japenese Anemones, they are a magical fairy tale like flower.
Of course, Dahlias go strong all summer and way into the fall before a hard frost hits them. Be sure to dig up the tubers and store them in a vermiculite , peatmoss mixture and put them in a cool dry place, but not freezing. If you do this each year, your perennial cutting borders will keep expanding and you can have cutting flowers for your arrangements well into the fall.
So keep gardening with y our mums, pumpkins, gourds, kale, cabbage and try adding pansies, perennial asters, ornamental fall grasses, Japenese Anemones, more Dahlias and Japenese Lanterns. Your fall garden will be more interesting and spectacular. Don’t forgot to cut some of your flowers and bring them inside to add to your floral arrangements. also remember fall is the time to be planting your spring flowering bulbs, so get planning your spring garden and get planting, you will be rewarded for all your hard work in a few months with Springs beautiful flowers in your yard. (just protect them from deer)
